Mr. Swensen has a Bachelor of Theatre degree in acting and directing from Willamette University. As part of his degree he studied Shakespeare, art history and art criticism. he started reading science fiction as a young man -- probably Heinlein's Have Space Suit Will Travel -- and was an instant fan of the genre. He was born and raised in Alaska, where his father was a bush pilot and lodge owner, and spent summers running powerboats up and down Alaskan rivers guiding visitors to the best fishing holes. His childhood, consequently, was extremely adventuresome, complete with rafting mishaps, hunting adventures and even a couple of airplane crashes. With training in the performing arts, where the study of character is key, with a personal history full of adventure in the Alaskan outback and with a deep love for all things science fiction, Mr. Swensen writing contains well-rounded characters amid backgrounds of offworld adventure.
